What is Constraints in AI?

Technique Glossary term: Constraints
Short Answer

Explicit limits or requirements that narrow how the model should respond.

Constraints are the boundaries placed on an AI response. They can define length, format, tone, scope, allowed sources, forbidden topics, or any other condition that narrows the output.

Adding constraints improves control. Instead of asking for a broad answer and hoping it stays on target, the prompt tells the model exactly what conditions it must satisfy.

Constraints are especially useful in business workflows where outputs need to fit templates, follow policies, or stay within operational limits.

Best Practices

  • State hard requirements explicitly
  • Group related constraints together
  • Avoid conflicting limits in the same prompt
  • Use constraints to control both content and format
